Ambrose "Rowdy" Gaines was born February 17, 1959, at Winterhaven, Florida. From the late seventies through the mid eighties he was the fastest swimmer in the history of the world. While at Auburn University he was: 22 times an All-American selection; 5 times an individual NCAA champion; 3 times an NCAA Relay Champion; 6 times an SEC Individual Champion; 8 times an SEC Relay Champion. He is the holder of 5 SEC records and 6 Auburn records and was selected one of the NCAA's five top scholar athletes in 1982. He became an Olympic Champion in the 1984 Olympic games at Los Angeles where he won three gold medals and set world records in the 100 meter and 200 meter freestyles. He was chosen World Swimmer of the Year in 1980 and 1985. He is currently the chief fundraising officer with USA Swimming in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
