Emory "Bubba" Church

Emory “Bubba” Church was born in Birmingham in 1924. Played prep ball at West End in Birmingham. Played collegiately at LSU. Teamed with Baseball Hall of Famer Robin Roberts in the pitching rotation of the Philadelphia Phillies “Whiz Kids” and helped them win the 1951 National League pennant. Was 15-11 with 3.53 ERA, 104 strikeouts, 90 walks, and completed 15 full games. He is one of twelve living members of one of baseball’s most famous teams. Also played with the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs. Played pro ball for eight years, first as pitcher-outfield at Salina in Western Assn. In 1948 and ‘49 for Toronto, won 15, lost 8. Led International League with 2.35 ERA. His overall record in the majors was 36 wins, and 37 losses. Retired from baseball in 1955. He passed away in 2001.
