James Luther Sewell was born January 15, 1901, in Titus, Alabama. After graduating from the University of Alabama in 1921 where he excelled in football and baseball, Luke played in 17 games with Columbus' AA team. He then moved up to Cleveland from 1921 to 1932. In 1933 and ‘34 he was with Washington and then Chicago in 1935-38. He coached at Cleveland in 1939-40 and managed the St. Louis Browns from 1941-46, winning the pennant in ‘44. In 1950-51 he managed at Cincinnati. He is deceased.
