Riley Henry Smith was born in Greenwood, Mississippi July 13, 1911. At the University of Alabama from 1933 to 1934, he quarter backed his way to All-American status in 1935. He was All-Southeastern Conference in 1933- 34-35 and won the Jacobs Trophy (awarded to best blocker); he also lettered in track for 3 years at the University. His pro career started with the Boston Patriots in ‘36 and the Washington Redskins in ‘37-'38. They won the World Championship in 1937. He coached at Washington and Lee from 1938 until he entered the Navy in 1942. After the war, he moved to Mobile. He is deceased.
