Willie Lee McCovey was born in Mobile, Alabama, on January 10, 1938. After 5 years in the minor leagues, he went with the San Francisco Giants. In his first major league game in 1959, he had 4 hits to tie a National League record. His consistent hitting won him Rookie of the Year honors in 1959. He played in 2,588 games, batting .270 with 521 home runs, (he is 10th in career home runs) 46 triples, and 353 doubles. After 22 years, Willie retired in 1980. He was enshrined in the Baseball Hall of Fame at Cooperstown in 1986, and now resides in Woodside, California.
