Birthplace: Birmingham, AL.

He played 13 years in the major leagues for the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Boston Red Sox.  He was known as one of the hardest left handed throwers in the majors.  He led the National League in strikeouts in 1964 and finished second in '65 and third in '66.  His lifetime ratio of 7.96 strikeouts per nine innings ranks fifth all-time (1,500-plus innings).  Played in two All-Star games ('65 & '66).  When he retired in '74, he was the only Pirate pitcher to have 200 strikeouts in a season. His career stats: 120 wins, 95 losses, 20 shutouts with a 3.07 earn run average (ERA).  Played on the Pirate squad that won the World Series in 1971.
