Played collegiately for Auburn University.† Was the Most Valuable Player on Auburnís 1957 National Championship Team.† During the Ď57 season he scored 83 points (11 touchdowns), which led the SEC in scoring and ranked him third in the country.† At that time he became Auburnís All-Time leading scorer.† He was the star of the 1958 Senior Bowl.† The San Francisco 49ers drafted Atkins in í58 and he also played for the Buffalo Bills of the American Football League.† He led the Bills and the league with the most interceptions (10) and also had the best punting average at 45.3 yards a punt.† On January 8, 1966 named Head Football Coach at Troy State.† In í68 he coached Troy State to a National Championship and for his efforts was named NAIA Coach of the Year.† He coached professionally for the Buffalo Bills, Detroit Lions, San Francisco 49íers and the St. Louis Cardinals.† He died November 5, 1991.
