Bill Ireland
Class of 2000

Category: Distinguished Alabama Sportsman

Born December 3, 1923 in Gadsden, Alabama. He has been described as “one of the best friends the environment of Alabama has ever had.” That friendship can easily be expanded to include education, volunteerism, philanthropy, athletics and business, for he has been a true and valued friend to all. He has served with distinction as President of the Alabama Wildlife Federation and for years on its Board of Directors. His greatest service for the environment was his leadership role in the development and approval of the state’s "Forever Wild" constitutional amendment, which is a state program to provide funds for land acquisition and stewardship to be used for conservation and recreation purposes from now on. Active in golf, he has won several tournaments around the state as well as having played a major leadership role in the first three of ten LPGA tournaments held locally and the 1984 PGA Championship at Shoal Creek.
