Cleon Jones was born August 4, 1942 in Plateau, AL near Mobile. He was a premier football player at Mobile County Training school and at Alabama A&M where he scored 17 touchdowns in two seasons. He signed a baseball contract in 1962 and was named to the Topps Major League All-Star Rookie Team in 1966 as a member of the New York Mets. Two years later, he led the team in hitting with a .297 averaage. In 1969, he led the "Amazing Mets" to the World Championship while hitting a team record .340, third best in the National League. In the playoffs that year, he had a .429 batting average and led his team in total hits, doubles, walks and stolen bases. That season he started in the National League All-Star outfield with fellow Alabamian Hank Aaron. He stroked two hits and scored twice in that game. In 1970, he batted .319. For his career, which spanned 13 years, he batted .281. He now lives in Mobile, AL.
