Dr. Larry Lemak
Class of 1997 Category: Distinguished Alabama Sportsman
Born June 10, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He is a world-renowned sports medicine and orthopedic surgeon and a leader in sports medicine and arthroscopy research. Dr. Lemak is a graduate of the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical School and completed his orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lemak was a founder and board member of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI). He was also a founding partner of Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, which was founded in 1986 and became one of the nation's leading orthopaedic clinics until 2007, when the center was dissolved. He was also the Medical Director of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA), and the World League of American Football (a division of the NFL), and major league Soccer. His leadership brought Olympic soccer to Birminghamin 1988, and became one of the most successful events ever held in Alabama. Dr. Lemak revolutionized sports safety and prevention both on and off the field by helping standardize treatment for professional and college athletes, educating coaches, and researching injuries. Lemak continues his commitment to sports safety and prevention. American Sports Medicine Institute and the Alabama Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Cente rdeveloped an internationally recognized fellowship program. More than 100 physicians and surgeons have studied under the leadership of Dr. Lemak and his practice. Dr. Lemak and his son, Dr. David Lemak, remain as team physicians for 18 high schools,Samford University, Miles College, Alabama State University and the University of South Florida. Dr. Lemak continues as the medical director for several professional sports. Dr. Lemak's professional affiliations include the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, Arthroscopy Association of North America, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine among others. His visions and commitments brought quality sporting events to the State ofAlabama.
