Governor George Corley Wallace was born at Clio, Alabama, on August 5, 1919. At the University of Alabama he was captain of the varsity boxing team and was president of the spirit committee. He was elected Governor of Alabama in 1962, 1970, 1974 and 1982. His competitive spirit had long tagged the Governor as "The Fighter.” His greatest fight has been the constant one he waged for his health following an assassin's attempt on his life while he was a candidate for the Presidency of the United States. He was instrumental in establishing the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. In 1986 Governor Wallace chose not to run for an unprecedented 5th term an retired from public office. He passed away in 1998.
