JoJo Starbuck - Born February 14, 1951, in Birmingham, Alabama…With figure skating being a unique combination of sport and entertainment, American figure skating champion JoJo Starbuck has had a multi-faceted career as an athlete and artist, and now as a producer and spokesperson…With her childhood skating partner, Ken Shelley, they made skating history when in 1968, they became the youngest pairs team America had ever sent to the Olympic Games. That was followed by victories as the U.S. National Pairs Champions in 1970, 1971 and 1972. They were the first Americans to break the Soviet domination in the pairs event by winning the bronze medal at the World Championships in 1971 and ’72. In 1994, JOJO and Ken were inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame…She turned professional in ’72, starring in “Ice Capades” for four years. She has appeared in scores of television specials here and abroad. From ’77 through ’80, Starbuck partnered with Olympic champion John Curry in his highly acclaimed “Ice Dancing” on Broadway at New York’s Metropolitan Opera House and around the world. She now operates Starbuck and Company, Inc., a special events production group. Since ’88 she has been the “Head Pro” and spokesperson for The Rink at Rockefeller Center in New York, staging and coordinating shows and special events on a regular basis at the world famous outdoor ice rink…In October 1993, she staged and choreographed “Skates of Gold,” the first international figure skating event devoted exclusively to Olympic gold medallists, which aired on ABC-TV. She has enjoyed hosting and commentating many television skating events, has performed in two feature films, and has authored an autobiography. In addition to choreographing for varies World and Olympic competitors, she conducts skating workshops around the world for young competitive and professional skaters. In the fall of ’97, Starbuck and Shelley returned to the ice for the Legends of Figure Skating Championships which aired several times on ESPN.
