Wilbur H. Hutsell was born November 10, 1892, in Mobley, Missouri. He was a quarter miler at the University of Missouri from 1911 to 1914 where he served in his first job as assistant track coach. In 1921 he was named track coach at Auburn. Before retiring in 1963, his teams had won 112 dual meets, lost only 25 and were three times SEC champions. He was on the Olympic coaching staff in 1924, ‘28, and ‘32 and was president of the National Track Coaches Association in 1941 and ‘42. He was enshrined in the Helms Track and Field Hall of Fame. A very popular coach, he served as Auburn's athletic director twice and was also a long-time athletic trainer. Coach Hutsell passed away December 8, 1980.
