George Smith Lindsey was born December 17, 1928, in Fairfield, Alabama. He was an athlete at Walker County High and at Florence State. He coached one year at Hazel Green High before launching a show business career where everybody knows him as "Goober". He initiated the George Lindsey Celebrity Golf Classic in Montgomery in 1971. His glory and fame in Alabama sports is for his renowned godfathering of competitive athletics for thousands of Alabama youngsters, particularly for Special Olympics. He continues to entertain through television and the movies.
