Born October 18, 1946 in York, Alabama…He has dedicated the better part of his life to serving Auburn University . From 1965 as a freshman to 2005 when he retired as Athletic Director, he has been totally committed to Auburn and its success. After graduation with a degree in journalism he worked in the ticket office for three years followed by his teaching journalism from 1972-80. In 1980 he joined the Sports Information Department where he advanced to Director and then as Assistant Athletic Director. In 1994 he was namedAuburn’s Director of Athletics and set as his goal to leaveAuburn and the Athletic Department “better than he found it.” The Athletic Department has four major measures for evaluating quality and success: competitive success, the academic success of its athletes, fiscal responsibility, and rules compliance. Under his guidance consider the following: Auburn won eight team national championships, thirteen southeastern titles, and one hundred forty-five teams advanced to post season play; posted its highest graduation rates ever; experienced the greatest facilities enhancement program in its history; was financially sound each year. By any standard Auburn was successful in meeting these objectives during his 10 years as Athletics Director. In fact Auburn experienced the greatest period of growth, progress and success in its history under his leadership.
