Born 1919, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, Culverhouse attended the University of Alabama, and was the longtime owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of the National Football League. He graduated in 1941. After serving in the Army Air Corps in World War II, he earned a law degree from his alma mater in 1947. He immediately took a job as an assistant state attorney general, serving there for two years. He was a successful tax lawyer, and served as Assistant Attorney General for the State of Alabama. He was well known for his support of worthy charities and humanitarian causes. He has also made significant donations to many educational institutions throughout theSouthern United States. His Alma Mater has made him an honorary Professor of Accounting and Doctor of Humane Letters. Mr. Culverhouse passed away due to lung cancer on August 25, 1994, survived by his wife Joy, daughter Gay, and son Hugh, Jr
