Carl Lewis went on to become one of the most recognized track Olympians in U.S. history winning nine Olympic Gold Medals in four Olympics. He won four consecutive Golds in the Long Jump (1984, 1988, 1992 and 1996) and two consecutive Golds in the 100-meter dash (1984 and 1988). Lewis gathered two Golds in the 4×100-meter relay (1984 and 1992). He became the second athlete in history to win four track Gold Medals (1984); joining another ASHOF member, Jesse Owens, with that distinction. Lewis made five consecutive U.S. Olympic teams (including the 1980 boycott year). He’s a former world record holder in the 100 meters (1991) and was ranked first in the U.S. in the 100m from 1981-89, 200m from 1981-86, and long jump (1981-‘85, 1987-‘89, 1992 and 1996).
