Cleon Jones played baseball collegiately at Alabama A&M. He signed a baseball contract in 1962 and was named to the Topps Major League All-Star Rookie Team in 1966 as a member of the New York Mets. He played for the 1969 “Miracle Mets” team that won the World Series in the franchise’s eighth season; Jones caught the final out of the Series. That season he hit a team record .340, third best in the National League, and was named to the NL All-Star Team. For his 13-year career, he had a .281 batting average, 1,188 hits, and 521 RBIs over 1,201 at-bats. He was elected into the Mets Hall of Fame and the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame in 1991.
