Homan graduated from Muscle Shoals High School in 1964 where he was a three-sport letterman in basketball, football and baseball. He lettered at split end for the University of Alabama for two years, earning consensus All-American his senior year catching 54 passes for 820 yards and nine touchdowns. He previously held the Tide record for most career touchdown receptions (18) and ranks high in several receiving records. He was a member of the 1965 National Championship squad and was named MVP of the South team in the 1968 Senior Bowl game. A first-round draft choice in 1968, he spent three seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. He played on the Cowboys Super Bowl V championship team and also played for the Kansas City Chiefs from 1971-72 and with Birmingham of the WFL from 1974-75.
