Bridgers received a football scholarship to Auburn University in 1940 and began coaching in 1946 as a graduate assistant. In 1947, he was named head track coach and offensive and defensive line coach for the University of the South. In 1953, he became head football coach at Johns Hopkins University. He joined the Baltimore Colts coaching staff in 1957 and won an NFL Championship with them in 1958. Following his time in Baltimore, he was head football coach and athletic director at Baylor from 1959-68. From 1973-79, he was the athletic director at Florida State. He completed his career in athletics as athletic director at the University of New Mexico from 1979-87.
