He played football at the University of Alabama from 1933-1935, as quarterback he was an All-American in 1935. He helped Alabama win a national title in 1934 and the Rose Bowl in 1935. He was All-SEC in 1933, 1934, and 1935 and won the Jacobs Blocking Trophy. He also ran track for three years at Alabama. His pro career started with the Boston Patriots in 1936 and he played with the Washington Redskins in from 1937-1938. They won the championship in 1937. He coached at Washington and Lee from 1938 until he entered the Navy in 1942. After the war, he moved to Mobile.
