Abbott played baseball at Jacksonville State University (JSU) and became the head coach at JSU in 1970. He won back-to-back National Championships (Division II) in 1990 & ‘91 and was named NCAA Division II Coach of the Year both years. His teams won five Gulf South Conference titles and 11 Gulf South Conference Division titles. He guided JSU to seven NCAA Division II World Series. He retired after the 2001 season, 32 years as head coach; his record was 1003-467.
