In 1973, he was voted the Best High School Track Miler in the Nation by Track and Field News. Received a track scholarship to Alabama and was a three-time All-American. He was the first person in the history of the SEC to break four minutes in the mile. He won the Southeastern Conference Individual Championship ten times in Cross Country and Indoor and Outdoor Track. He was the first of 11 runners in the world to break the four-minute mile and run a marathon under two hours and fifteen minutes. At one time in the late ‘70’s and early ‘80’s he held distance records in Alabama for the following: the mile (3 minutes and 59 seconds), the two mile (8 minutes and 37 seconds), the 5,000 meters (13 minutes and 50 seconds) and the marathon (2 hours and 14 minutes).
